Escalator Working Principle

At the center of the escalator are two chains that rotate around two pairs of gears. At the top of the escalator, there is a motor drive transmission to turn the chain. A typical escalator uses a 100-hp engine to turn gears. The engine and chain system are installed in the framework. A frame is a metal structure that extends between two layers.

Unlike moving plane conveyors, the chain moves through a series of steps. The most interesting place for escalators is how these steps move. As the chain moves, the passenger side steps remain horizontal. At the top and bottom of the escalator, the steps are folded against each other to form a platform. This makes it easier to get up and down escalators.

Each step on the escalator has two sets of wheels that rotate along two separate tracks. The upper device (the wheel near the top of the step) is connected to the rotating chain and is pulled by the drive gear at the top of the escalator. The other set of wheels simply slid along the track and taxied behind the first set of wheels.

The two tracks are spaced apart so that each step can be kept horizontal. At the top and bottom of the escalator, the rails are in a horizontal position so that the steps are flattened. There is a series of grooves in each step so that in the flattening process, the two steps are connected together.

In addition to rotating the main chain, the motor on the escalator can also move the handrail. The handrail is just a rubber conveyor that circulates around a series of wheels. The precise configuration of the conveyor belt makes it possible to move at the same speed as the steps, making the rider feel smooth.

Unlike elevators, escalator systems do not allow people to climb to dozens of floors, but it is suitable for short-haul transportation. This is because of the high load rate of escalators. After the elevator is full, it must wait until the elevator reaches the designated floor before returning to the elevator. On an escalator, whenever someone reaches the upper level, he will make room for others.
