Have you ever thought of a world without a private car? The future without a personal car only requires a change of attitude, but it also requires new infrastructure. Our proposed solution is to move the sidewalk.

A four-year research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation called PostCarWorld called for people to do this and took away some surprising things: Swiss people may indeed imagine a future without private vehicles. Although the prospects for the future may not completely eliminate cars, the project found that people like efficient public transport and a comfortable walking urban environment. Of course, there are some lifestyle considerations, such as online shopping and telecommuting, but these responses also require improvements in infrastructure.

The most fascinating of these improvements is the use of moving sidewalks for the concept of commuting. In a report released this week by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), postdoctoral researcher Riccardo Scarinci found that if designed properly, a moving walkway can move 7,000 passengers per hour instead of a road car that could hold 1,800 people. Considering that many passengers are the only passengers in the car, these numbers may be eye-opening. Although this vision may become a reality for decades, it means huge and exciting opportunities.
